Earth & Death: A Remembering

Remember Death. Be held by the Earth.

Receive clarity, support, and wisdom from nature as you reflect on the inevitability of death.  It is counter-intuitive, but facing the truth of mortality brings more aliveness and joy to daily life.  Death comes to all living beings; everyone we know, everyone we love will eventually meet their mortality.

Western culture struggles to look at the truth of death.  During this workshop, listen to your body and to the land as you explore the reality of death and impermanence that exist within each moment of life.

Together we’ll be asking the questions:

What does our Earth know of death?

How can you turn to the natural world as a teacher of impermanence?

When: Saturday, October 17th, 1-4:30pm

Location: The Verdancy Project

To keep the experience intimate, we are only offering 12 spots!

Our Venue: The Verdancy Project

This workshop will take place at The Verdancy Project, a forest sanctuary about 35 minutes outside of most Portland neighborhoods. The Verdancy Project rests on 4.5 acres of land along Beaver Creek. The land is lovingly stewarded by artist Shannon Amidon & her family.  This retreat space is a beautiful blend of human creativity and nature’s magic.  We’ll spend part of our time inside the cozy, imaginative artist’s studio, and part of our time outside on the land.

With many covered, comfortable nooks to tuck into (including a treehouse!), this workshop will take place rain or shine!

Our Facilitators

Jordan Amali (she/her)

Facilitator & Co-Creator

Jordan Amali is a death doula with a masters degree in public health. She is an end-of-life community organizer and a hospice volunteer coordinator. Her work is inspired by the fact that death is the only shared experience we are all absolutely guaranteed, yet our American social ecosystems fail to support this inevitable part of life. Acknowledging death, planning for death, and embracing life in the face of death is truly revolutionary work that can change how we engage in every aspect of living.

Julie Jansen (she/they)

Facilitator & Co-Creator

Julie Jansen guides individuals and groups in meditation, movement, and land-based practices.  Through her gentle, trauma-informed guidance Julie empowers people to bring presence-based practices into their lives.  She is a certified Forest Therapy Guide, yoga teacher, and co-founder of Earthbody Presence.  Currently, Julie teaches meditation and movement at Portland State University along with facilitating retreats, forest bathing, and other offerings with Earthbody Presence.  She also holds a Masters of Art in Art Education degree. Julie lives and work on the ancestral homelands of the Upper Chinook people in what is now Portland, Oregon.

Jade Hering (she/her)

Community Tender & Co-Creator

Jade is an oncology nurse with 15 years of experience, a hospice nurse at Hopewell House, an End of Life Choices of Oregon (EOLCOR) volunteer, a certified death doula, and an RN health care advocate. Her work is rooted in a deep belief that caring for people at the end of life is sacred work, and that conversations and explorations about death can be a powerful way to reconnect us with what makes life meaningful. Jade is passionate about making end-of-life topics more accessible for people of all ages and life stages, creating space for greater presence and joy.

Facilitation Flow

During this workshop, Jordan and Julie will co-facilitate throughout the day. Jordan will bring in her expertise as a death doula and end-of-life community advocate. Julie will weave in knowledge of presence-based practices, somatic embodiment, and Earth connection as a certified Forest Therapy Guide.

We are fortunate to welcome Jade as a community tender. She will hold space for anyone in our group who needs support as we navigate conversations around death and dying. This is sensitive territory, and Jade will bring gentle compassion to those who need extra care during our time together.

Jordan, Jade, and Julie collaborated to create this beautiful offering. This is important, heart-centered work that we are excited to share with you!
